So those are the main three file types, but how do you listen to
them? How can you get them onto your computer?
There are hundreds of computer programmes designed to play internet
music files. Some deal with as many as they can, while others stick
to just one. Specific examples can be found in the [SOFTWARE]
section of this guide.
Player software, simply deals with reading
the music file and playing it through your computers sound card.
There are hundreds of examples of this software on the internet.
Many are homemade products - someone has written a piece of player
software, with all the features they required, and decided to release
it to the public. Most of these are free. Some of the commercial
player software also come in free versions (usually with reduced
features).
Encoder software, is software that turns
a normal wave sound file or CD track, and creates a copy of it,
converting it in to one of the internet music file types as it does.
This is one way of getting internet music files onto your computer
so you can play them later. There are encoder software packages
for all of the main OM file types. Some can encode files in all
of these file types, while others deal with just one, much like
the player software. Like player software, free versions are available
as are those that you pay for. There are also encoder software packages,
that also play the music files as well as just create them.
As well as creating a OM file, you can get
them on your computer by downloading them. There are thousands of
sites on the internet that you can download music files from. Most
of the files are illegal copies of songs. Many record companies
release one song onto the internet as a promotional exercise for
an artist. Downloading from a site is easy. Simply click on the
hyperlink to the song, and the download will begin.
A different way to download a song file, is through File Sharing
software.
