iMESH:
One of the newest File Sharing programmes out there, iMESH is also
one of the best. Not only can you swap music files, but video, images,
programmes and documents can be shared as well.
The iMESH interface is nice and uncluttered. There are a few advertisments
at the bottom of the screen, which serve to make the software free.
The software is simple to use, from the moment you start. You simply
click the search tab, enter a keyword to search for, define the
type of file you want to look for, hit the search button, then double
click on the file you want, if the software finds it. Simple!
Napster
Napster was one of the first File Sharing programmes in the public
domain, and is easily the most notorius. This is due to the sheer
amount of press generated when the record industry took it to court
for copyright infringement: they claimed Napster knowingly allowed
users to swap illegally copied song files. Artists such as Metallica
and Dr DRE headed the attack on Napster, which earned both sides
a lot of publicity.
Napster has a very simple interface. It takes a moment to get used
to, but once you do, it is simple to find what you are looking for.
Napster only allows you to look for MP3 files. It's search tools
are more comprehensive than iMESH's. Not only can you specify the
song title, but the artist and album as well. You can set what level
of sound quality you want, and how fast the connection of the other
user must be.
Napster is slow compared to iMESH. This is because Napster must
connect through a central server to the othr computer, while iMESH
connects directly.
Also, you are soon going to have to start paying to use Napster,
due to the legal action, and won't be able to swap files that are
copyrighted material.
